K +S: Kona Couples Photos to Remember
Getting a kona couple’s session is a wonderful way to commemorate a season in one’s life. That’s why engagement, maternity, or even honeymoon pictures are so popular: because they are a piece of art that reflects a time worth remembering. That’s why it was so important to us that we did a photoshoot as a gift to our dear friends Kevin and Sarah.
They were on their way into a completely different time in their lives. For the past 7 years, their family had lived in Kona serving the community and being refreshed from their years overseas. But now, the season was coming to a close. They were on their way back into the mission field in the Middle East to pour out the love of God to the people there. It was time to say goodbye to the big island and much of the deep community they’d built.
When we first offered to do beach family photos for Sarah and Kevin, they were hesitant because it felt like “one more thing” to squeeze into the overwhelming last few days before they moved across the entire world. But reflecting on how special these photos could be to them, they agreed.
When we arrived at the beach they chose, the emotion was already present. Sarah realized this was the same beach where some friends had put together a celebration for her youngest son before he got married. It was more than a celebration; it was a send-off. And here we all were back again, but this time, they were the sent ones.
Grant, our head photographer here at ELP Productions, immediately got to work doing what he does best. He encouraged them to laugh, smile, and embrace as the camera captured it all. What began as something they wanted to do just to get the photos, actually became a helpful break and time to share memories together as a couple.
Sarah even said that being out on the beach with us was a “much-needed time of refreshment” and she was surprised by how comfortable and confident she felt. We laughed about the old photo studios in malls where people used to get family photos in, with the strange backdrops, poses, and props. Times have changed in family photography where the camera’s job is to capture what’s already there, not make up some strange scene.
One of the sweetest moments of this time was the vibrant rainbow that appeared above them. The many colors shone down on them as a reminder of the promises of God coming forth in their life. What began as a quick couple’s photoshoot in Kona became a time of reflection, refreshment, and faith. That is the significance of taking the time to capture a changing season.
Of course, few of us will experience such a dramatic shift in our lives as this one. My hope is not to communicate that somehow getting a family photoshoot in Hawaii will always be this emotional. However, I want to highlight the magnitude and beauty of setting time aside to be photographed with the ones we love. Life changes so quickly and often unexpectedly. I’ve never met someone who regretted taking their most treasured photos of their family members.
